The pharaoh ant

Scientific name :Monomorium pharaonis
Class: Insects
Order:Hymenoptera
FamilyFormicidae

The monomorium pharaonis commonly referred to as Pharaoh Ants, have a common name derived from a mistaken analogy. During the reign of Pharaoh, it was a kind of epidemic in the land of Egypt. They were believed to originate from the African continent. However, they are widely distributed throughout the United States of America. Being a tropical species of insects, pharaoh ants are very common in warm regions of America and Canada.

Varying in color from yellow to light brown, tiny in size, these ants measure only 1.5 to 2 mm with a dark colored tip. These ants carry 12 segmented antennae. Compared to the eyes of insects of similar sizes, these bear exceptionally smaller ones. The prothorax (the anterior part of the insect's thorax) has angular shoulders while the part of the thorax a region is explicitly defined by prints. The pubescence of the body and the erect hair are sparse, but strongly attached to the organism of these tropical insects.

Compared to the rear part (usually yellow), the abdomen part is relatively dark. Like other ants, the pharaoh ant's head, petiole, post petiole, and head are semi-opaque and inconspicuous. They also carry a stinger that rarely comes out. The stinger is more commonly used by queens.

The queen, males and workers are the main members of the pharaoh ant colony.. Unreachable levels of temperature (82 to 88°F), moist and warm environment define their nesting environment, for example the hollows of blackberries. The colony has no fixed size, but it is usually large, ranging from a few dozen to several hundred. The transition of an ant from the egg state to adulthood requires a period of about 38 days. These ants eat all types of food, especially sweets, and can even eat other insects. The size of the Queens is larger than that of the males, 4 mm and 2 mm respectively.

Generally, the males are black in color while the queens are clear brown or yellow color. The color of the queen is darker than that of the workers. Of all the members of the colony, the Queens are the most mobile. The latter can build nests in any kind of dark and undisturbed spaces, if they find the right environment.

Pharaoh Ant Extermination Requires a Dedicated Indoor Baiting Program

For a successful pharaoh ant extermination program, bait should be planted in common areas where ant food is harvested.

Baiting the feeding grounds will cause food hunters from different settlements to feed on the bait you have placed. In the worst case scenario where complete pharaoh ant extermination is required, the treatment can extend to several months. We know very well that pharaoh ants move in long lines. It is therefore advisable to place the bait along the edges of the mold of the doors and at the corners of the plinths. When it comes to exterior treatment, you need to place an effective bait all around the perimeter of the building or structure.
