Class:Insects
Order:Hymenoptera
FamilyApidae
Life expectancy:European bee: 122 – 152 days, Bombus pratorum: 28 days

About bees

The bee belongs to the genus Apis. There are about seven species of honey bees and about 44 subspecies. There are other species of bees, but the real ones are those that belong to the genus Apis. Bees have small, thick, hairy bodies. Also, they have six legs and three body parts. There are three eyes above their heads. Thanks to these eyes, bees can see all sorts of colors and patterns around them. Compound eyes help them see the image at different scattered points. Bees have jaws that bite off the lower part of their head which they use to suck nectar and pollen.

Bees can barely distinguish the differences in tastes, except for sour and salty. The largest bees can be as much as 1.5 inches long. Typical honey bees are between 0.5 inch to 1 inch long. Size varies from species to species. Their size can be compared to that of a paperclip. Bumblebees are the largest, measuring roughly 1 inch long. Most bees are completely black, but they may have yellow or brown stripes. The color of the stripes may vary.

Among other things, they can be brown, even purple, in some cases. Honey bees have yellow stripes, but their bodies are brown, not black. Bumblebees are generally larger and are mostly black in color with wider bands of yellow or orange. They look like wasps.

Types of bees

All bees work like a big family. There are three types of bees in a hive:

  • Workers are the only bees we see. They do most of the work. They make sure to collect enough food, clean the hive and take care of the queen bee.
  • There is a Queen in a hive and she lays the eggs to see new bees. Queens regulate the activities in a hive.
  • The third class is called DRONES or male bees. During the winter, the bees gather in a ball of heat and feed on reserves of honey and pollen.

Here are some bee extermination methods

Although bees give us honey and are essential for commercial production, their sting can be very painful. If you have a beehive near your house, you will need to carry outan extermination of bees. Otherwise, if you disturb it, the whole swarm can attack you by stinging you fiercely. Here are some safe bee extermination methods:

  • If the hive is not too big and not in a dangerous area, use the smoke from a burning piece of paper or cloth to scare away the bees, then break the hive .
  • Use Spectracide intended to kill bees.
  • Put a bowl of vinegar near the hive, if possible.
  • Use a bottle containing flavored soda and place it upside down. The bees will be attracted to the soda and eventually become trapped in the bottle.
